Orchestra Residency 2024

Orchestra Residency 2024

The Orchestra of the Americas in concert with Yo-Yo Ma and Kayhan Kalhor

Residency

Composed of fellows from OAcademy Music Conservatory, a group of students from the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance, and Mexico’s Escuela Superior de Musica y Danza Monterrey, the Orchestra will be in residence in Ann Arbor from June 5 till June 11.

The program, including the new concerto, will be workshopped and rehearsed with Yo-Yo Ma, Kayhan Kalhor, Carlos Miguel Prieto, and OAcademy Faculty on the University of Michigan’s campus. The residency culminates in a performance on Tuesday, June 11 in Ann Arbor’s Hill Auditorium.

Kayhan Kalhor, an internationally acclaimed kamancheh (Persian spiked fiddle) virtuoso, first began collaborating with Yo-Yo Ma as founding members of the Silk Road Project. According to Kalhor, the concerto for cello, kamancheh, and orchestra is an “ode to peace and a celebration of a 25-year friendship with Ma. The piece was written to instill a sense of calm during complicated times and to reflect on the beauty that lies hidden in the balance of what it means to be human.”

“For our 2024 Orchestra Institute fellows, the Michigan residency is the final step in their growth journey with us and a send-off to their next chapter entering the professional orchestra world.”

CEO, The Orchestra of the Americas Group

“Whenever you put together two or three institutions that may have very different or very specific cultures, they always grow exponentially. I imagine that this residency in Ann Arbor will result in a very high level of music-making first, a very committed level of music-making second, a very joyous level of music-making third, and probably most importantly, also a possibly life-changing experience for many on stage and hopefully off stage too.”
